Romanian travelers confront hotel hygiene risks and steep vacation costs

Hotel rooms in Romania may harbour invisible germs despite a clean appearance. Rapid cleaning cycles of ten to thirty minutes often leave surfaces such as toothbrush cups, cutlery, coffee mugs and faucet handles insufficiently sanitized, allowing bacteria like E. coli to persist. Health experts advise guests to bring individually packaged cups or personal bottles, rinse dishes with hot water, use disinfectant wipes on high‑touch points and wash hands frequently.

At the same time, many Romanians are reluctant to book holidays amid economic uncertainty and the ongoing conflict in Europe. Travel agencies are offering deep discounts—some all‑inclusive 3‑star hotel packages have fallen from €1,800 to €823 for a family of three, and winter offers aim to keep demand alive. Yet Eurostat data show that over half of the population cannot afford a week‑long vacation abroad. One tourist, Andreea, secured a four‑day Malta trip for 400 lei, saying, “Vrem să vizităm cât mai multe obiective, să facem plajă și să ne distrăm.” Popular destinations remain low‑cost options such as Greece, with prices starting around €300 per person for a week.
