Romanian youth boost rural entrepreneurship and modern agriculture

A wave of entrepreneurship is reshaping Romania's countryside. Business guides list dozens of profitable rural ideas, from food production to tourism, noting lower start‑up costs and growing demand for authentic local products. The BCR‑backed Z‑Generation competition highlighted dozens of Gen Z startups targeting education, recruitment and tourism, with platforms such as Experium creating digital marketplaces for local experiences and planning regional expansion.

At the same time, young farmers are entering the agricultural sector in record numbers. According to the 2020 national agricultural census, 166,000 farm managers are under 35, representing 6 % of all managers. EU programmes and the European Commission’s "Young Farmers" scheme, together with private partners like Corteva Agriscience, are providing training, technology transfer and access to financing to modernise production and improve competitiveness on European and global markets.
