Romania's 8th‑Grade National Exam 2026 Draws Over 148,000 Candidates, Highlights Attendance Gaps

The Evaluarea Națională for students completing 8th grade began on 22 June 2026 across Romania. More than 148 000 pupils were registered to sit the written tests in Romanian language and literature, mathematics and mother‑tongue, with examinations running until 8 July. The Romanian‑language paper, worth 100 points, featured two extensive texts and a demanding summary task that teachers described as “among the most difficult” of the exam, with only a few candidates expected to achieve the maximum score.

Attendance irregularities were reported nationwide. Official statistics show that roughly 14 600 registered students – about 9 % of the cohort – were absent from the exam centres. County‑level data include 102 absentees in Botoșani, 142 in Buzău, and 142 000‑plus participants overall. Technical problems were also noted in some Bucharest schools, where delays occurred while uploading answer sheets.

The Ministry of Education has outlined strict rules for exam conduct, including bans on electronic devices and personal belongings, audio‑video monitoring of rooms, and procedures for contesting scores. Results are to be posted online on 1 July, with final scores released on 8 July.
