Romania's 2026 unemployment gap: Argeș at 4.36%, Vaslui above 8.8%

The Argeș County Labour Office reported that the unemployment rate rose to 4.36% at the end of May 2026, up from 4.32% the previous month. There were 9,984 registered unemployed persons, 5,029 women, and the majority (8,207) lived in rural areas. The largest age group among the unemployed were those over 55 years (2,529). Most job seekers have only primary or secondary education, with 28.76% holding only middle‑school qualifications. Employment‑readiness assessments classified 1,380 people as very hard‑to‑employ and 3,077 as hard‑to‑employ.

National data from the Romanian National Employment Agency show a sharp regional contrast. Vaslui County is projected to lead the country with an unemployment rate exceeding 8.8% in 2026, followed by Mehedinți and Teleorman around 8.7%. In contrast, Ilfov County and Bucharest will record rates below 1%. The disparity highlights a dual labour market: regions with abundant idle labour and others with tight recruitment conditions, influencing business location and investment decisions.
