Romania's Business Solar Market Faces Cost Pitfalls and Heat Inefficiency
Romania is approaching 300,000 prosumers with over 3,000 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity, according to the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE). While residential adoption once drove growth, corporate investment is now accelerating as firms seek to cut electricity bills and lock in predictable costs.
Experts warn that many companies install solar panels before optimising their own energy consumption, a mistake that can erode savings. Proper planning and demand‑side management can lower costs by up to 90% and allow the investment to break even within a few years.
Summer heat adds another challenge: photovoltaic output drops as cell temperature rises. Panels typically lose 0.3‑0.4% of their power for each degree Celsius above the 25 °C reference. When cell temperatures reach 60‑65 °C, performance can fall by about 12%, despite higher solar irradiance.
Industry voices such as Cătălin Popovici, founder of the energy‑efficiency firm Climatherm, stress that a strategic approach—combining solar generation with consumption optimisation and modernised equipment—will determine whether the shift to green energy translates into real financial and environmental benefits for Romanian businesses.
