Romania's Constitutional Court to Hear USR Challenge to Immunity Law

The Save Romania Union (USR) parliamentary group has filed a petition with Romania's Constitutional Court to contest the recently adopted immunity law for public officials. USR argues that two provisions, introduced at the request of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), breach the rule of law, European Union standards and the Romanian Constitution. The law, passed by the Senate on a decisive vote of 105 in favour, 8 against and 7 abstentions, amends the protection of public officials and was supported by PSD and AUR amendments.

USR leaders claim the contested clauses target PSD leader Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara, and AUR‑linked Mirabela Grădinaru, the spouse of President‑candidate Nicușor Dan, effectively using the law to remove political opponents. USR is gathering signatures to meet the threshold for a constitutional challenge, with the National Liberal Party (PNL) offering its senators' support. The Constitutional Court is scheduled to examine the case on 12 August.
