Romanian Government Ordered to Pay 5.2 bn lei in Judges' Salary Arrears
The Constitutional Court of Justice (ÎCCJ) postponed its ruling on the case against the Romanian Government, led by former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, and the Ministry of Finance. The court will issue a decision on July 23 2026 regarding the payment of outstanding salaries to judges and court staff, amounting to 5.2 billion lei, including 1.2 billion lei in interest and penalties.
The government was previously ordered to pay the arrears within ten days, but the former premier refused to execute the court’s definitive judgments. The case follows a loss for the executive at the Bucharest Court of Appeal and a subsequent request by Bolojan to bring the matter before the Constitutional Court.
Separate reports also highlighted the total sum claimed by the judiciary and reiterated the government's legal obligation to settle the debt as determined by multiple court rulings.
