Romania's Danube Delta flagged as a military vulnerability as river flow drops

Retired General Ion Oprișor, former presidential defense adviser, said the Danube Delta is a significant security weakness for Romania. Its vast, low‑lying terrain makes it hard to defend and monitor, even with a dedicated marine infantry unit. He highlighted the strategic role of the surrounding Dobrogea region, including the Mihail Kogălniceanu military base, the Port of Constanța, and major energy projects such as the Neptun Deep gas field, Cernavodă nuclear plant and the country's largest wind farm.

The National Institute of Hydrology forecasts that the Danube’s discharge at the Baziaș gauge will fall to about 1,800 cubic metres per second next week – roughly a third of the July multiyear average of 4,700 m³/s. While the main river recedes, many interior waterways are expected to rise because of predicted precipitation, potentially increasing flood risk in several basins.
