Romania's farm boost contrasts Black Sea grain route attacks

Intensified attacks on vessels, ports and export terminals in the Black Sea by Ukrainian and Russian forces are disrupting global shipments of grain and oil. The United Nations warned that “the consequences are already visible on global agricultural markets.” Russian carrier FESCO halted new orders after a drone strike on one of its ships, and Russia has stepped up strikes on civilian vessels and Odesa’s port infrastructure, which handles about 90% of Ukraine’s agricultural exports.

Amid the regional turmoil, Romania is projected to record a stronger agricultural output than many western European neighbours, according to The Guardian. While drought, heatwaves and wildfires cut yields in France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal, Romanian farms may see above‑average results, offering a potential buffer for European food supplies.
