Romania's General Prosecutor opposes drug decriminalization proposal
The Romanian General Prosecutor's Office has expressed opposition to a legislative proposal aimed at decriminalizing or reducing penalties for the possession of drugs for personal consumption. The initiative, submitted to the Senate by three parliamentarians including Senator Victoria Stoiciu, seeks to modify the current penal regime for drug users.
General Prosecutor Cristina Chiriac stated that such a move could weaken anti-drug prevention and combat efforts. The institution argued that reducing sanctions is not an opportune legislative solution in the current social and criminal context, as it could undermine the coherence of national anti-drug policies.
The Prosecutor's Office further noted that drug consumption impacts both users and the surrounding community, particularly minors. Additionally, officials warned that the demand for narcotics fuels the illegal market and that current possession laws provide essential investigative leads for authorities to track distributors.
