Romania’s July 31 Milestones: Prince Carol’s Abdication, Saint‑Exupéry’s Disappearance and the First Atomic Reactor
On 31 July 1919 Prince Carol of Romania renounced his succession rights for the second time after marrying Zizi Lambrino, creating a dynastic crisis. He later returned to the line in 1920 and eventually became King Carol II in 1930.
On 31 July 1944 French writer‑pilot Antoine de Saint‑Exupéry vanished during a reconnaissance mission over the Mediterranean from Corsica; the wreckage was identified decades later.
On 31 July 1957 Romania activated its first nuclear reactor, marking the nation’s entry into the atomic age.
The same calendar day also saw the births of Romanian cultural figures Mircea Baniciu, a noted folk‑rock musician, and Horațiu Mălăiele, a prominent actor, both born in 1949.
