Salina Praid placed under orange alert after microseismic activity

Between 25 and 27 July 2026 micro‑vibrations were recorded in the salt massif of the Salina Praid mine in Romania. The National Salt Company (SALROM) reported a rise in the salinity of the Corund stream during the same period. In response, SALROM proposed and authorities approved an orange‑level alert – a preventive measure that does not require evacuating residents.

Preliminary analysis showed that both the intensity and frequency of the micro‑seismic events are decreasing and are compatible with normal stress redistribution in the salt deposit. Surface inspections with drones, an automatic topographic station and on‑site specialists found no new collapses or signs of instability. Continuous monitoring of seismic, geotechnical, hydro‑geological and topographic data will remain in place.

The mine has been closed since May 2025 after flood waters from the Corund stream entered its galleries, damaging the tourist area. The orange alert will stay in force until at least 7 August 2026, and public access to the salt canyon remains prohibited.
