Romania's public companies record 11.3bn lei profit amid 145bn lei debt

A new online platform compiled by former deputy Cosette Chichirău aggregates data on 1,715 Romanian public companies – 1,381 owned by local authorities and 334 by the state. For 2025 the portfolio posted a net profit of roughly 11.3 bn lei, driven largely by three energy giants – Hidroelectrica, Romgaz and Nuclearelectrica – which supplied about 57 % of the total profit. The sector’s total liabilities stand at 145.5 bn lei. While 845 companies reported a combined profit of 15.72 bn lei, 399 entities accumulated losses of 4.41 bn lei, the majority of which are locally controlled firms. In the Mureș county snapshot, 17 public enterprises recorded combined revenues of about 358 m lei and total debts of 164 m lei. Aquaserv SA, the regional water operator, was the largest local firm with 224 m lei in revenue and a profit of 13.19 m lei, employing 746 people. The county’s airport authority reported a modest profit of 517 k lei on 7.6 m lei revenue but carried the highest debt among the local public entities at 52.2 m lei.
