Romania's railway infrastructure undergoes modernization amid systemic maintenance concerns
Romania's railway infrastructure is undergoing significant changes due to both modernization efforts and systemic maintenance issues. In the Cluj-Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor sector, the historic iron bridge at Vadu Crișului has been replaced as part of a major project to modernize and electrify the line.
Separately, Interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță has highlighted a critical state for CFR Călători, noting that service quality has declined significantly compared to a decade ago. Major delays, particularly at Gara de Nord, are being driven by speed restrictions necessitated by damaged tracks and bridge infrastructure.
To address these issues, the government has approved a 2026–2030 development strategy aimed at eliminating problematic track sections and ensuring timely salary payments. New measures include managerial evaluations every four months and transparent recruitment processes for administrative boards to reduce political influence in state transport companies.
