Romania's Romsilva Leads Forest Ownership as IKEA Tops Private Holdings

The Romanian state, through the forestry agency Romsilva, remains the largest forest owner in the country, managing over three million hectares—about half of the national forest fund. Recent state acquisitions include more than 4,000 hectares in Neamț County.

Among private owners, the Swedish group Ingka Investments, which manages IKEA's forest assets, is the biggest holder with roughly 50,000 hectares of Romanian woodland. Other notable private investors are Sweden's Greengold, Germany's Silvirom Navaro GmbH and Finland's Tornator, together with several families and local authorities that regained land through restitution.

Romsilva also operates large protective forest belts along the A2 "Autostrada Soarelui." Planted since 2018, the 4,132‑hectare green barrier of thuja, Turkish cherry, hawthorn and other species shields the highway from snow and strong northern winds, providing a cost‑effective alternative to conventional windbreaks.
