Romania’s tourism sector: volunteer farm stays grow as hotels use new spending tactics

Foreign tourists are increasingly choosing volunteer farm stays in Romanian villages such as Moșna and Hosman, exchanging work in gardens or traditional crafts for free accommodation and meals. The model, promoted through platforms like WWOOF, involves about 30 Romanian households and reflects a rising demand for authentic, low‑cost rural experiences; official data show 640,000 foreign visitors in the first four months of the year, a 3 % increase over the same period in 2025.

Hotel chains in Romania are investing heavily in psychological and design techniques to boost guest spending. Strategies include ambient lighting, scents, and music that create a sense of comfort, strategically placed mini‑bars and premium items, and layouts that guide tourists past retail and dining areas. Complimentary services such as breakfast are used to trigger the perception of value, encouraging further purchases. Operators report higher margins on ancillary services than on room rates alone.
