Romano Prodi criticizes Young Democrats' anti-war stance

Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has criticized recent comments made by Virginia Libero, the secretary of the Young Democrats, regarding military conflict. Speaking on Radio24, Prodi addressed Libero’s statement at the Festa dell’Unità in Reggio Emilia, where she suggested that young members would not be 'soldiers of your wars' and would 'organize deserters.'

Prodi stated that such a position is inconsistent with the official policy of the Partito Democratico (PD) and characterized the remarks as an error that falls outside the party’s established political framework. While acknowledging his own lifelong commitment to peace, he noted that current political circumstances have necessitated specific policy choices.

In contrast to his criticism of Libero, Prodi expressed support for a letter sent by PD leader Elly Schlein to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, describing Schlein’s proposal as a matter of 'common sense' regarding national emergencies.
