Rome approves €49.9 million tender for traffic light modernization

Rome is modernizing its traffic infrastructure through a new five-year contract for the management and maintenance of its traffic light network. Approved by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the tender is divided into two lots with a total auction base of nearly 50 million euros and is expected to run until 2031.

The project aims to upgrade over 1,500 traffic light systems across the city. Key technological advancements include the integration of artificial intelligence for advanced monitoring and diagnostics to identify faults more rapidly.

A major component of the initiative is the centralization of traffic lights. Approximately 100 new road axes, which currently lack centralized control, will be progressively connected to a central control station. This will allow for real-time monitoring and coordination of traffic flows along strategic routes, including several major thoroughfares and tramway sections, to improve road safety and circulation efficiency.
