Rome approves new territorial map with 334 urban districts

The Rome City Council has approved a new territorial map for the capital, marking the first major update to the city's official geography in nearly 50 years. The new mapping replaces the 1977 system, which had become outdated due to the city's expansion, particularly beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

The updated framework identifies 334 urban districts, 22 rioni, and 101 functional zones. This initiative was the result of a four-year process involving scientific research and civic participation, including contributions from local municipalities, Istat, and universities such as La Sapienza, Tor Vergata, and Roma Tre.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri stated that the new map is a tool to better understand the city's territories and communities, allowing for more precise data, improved service distribution, and more effective resource programming. The mapping does not create new administrative levels but serves as a technical and statistical instrument to support local policies and urban planning.
