Rome approves Roma Sport agency and 6.8 million road reopening fund

The Rome city council approved the creation of a new special company, Roma Sport, to manage municipal sports facilities. The measure, backed by Mayor Matteo Gualtieri’s administration, aims to streamline operations, lower user fees and channel revenues from profitable venues to poorer districts. The right‑wing Lega party criticised the move as an unnecessary and costly “carriage” that adds bureaucracy and expenses.

In a separate budget amendment, the Metropolitan City of Rome secured €6.8 million in grant funding from the Ministry of the Environment to restore the Genzano‑Lago provincial road (79/b). The project, championed by councillors Marta Elisa Bevilacqua and Stefano Cacciotti, will stabilise the hillside, improve safety and revive traffic flow for the Castelli Romani area after a landslide‑induced closure.

Both decisions reflect ongoing debates over public spending, infrastructure safety and the role of new municipal entities in Rome’s governance.
