Rome authorities clear building in Tor Sapienza amid crime concerns
Authorities are conducting an eviction of a building in the Tor Sapienza district of Rome following intense local pressure and reports of criminal activity. Residents had previously organized demonstrations and nightly patrols to combat rising crime, including thefts, robberies, and the alleged sale of weapons and drugs.
While local residents and social media videos fueled widespread panic regarding the presence of fentanyl in the area, the Prefect has stated that police investigations have not found evidence of the synthetic opioid in recent months. Some harm reduction experts suggest that the focus on fentanyl may be distracting from the widespread and established prevalence of crack cocaine in the region. The alarm was partially triggered by the theft of 80 fentanyl vials from the Ospedale Israelitico in June, an incident currently under investigation.
