Rome begins demolition of Shilling beach club in Ostia to restore public shoreline
The demolition of the Shilling beach establishment in Ostia started on 28 July 2026. Officials present included Rome’s Prefect Lamberto Giannini, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, X Municipality president Mario Falconi and assessor Tobia Zevi. The club, seized in the summer of 2024, had been closed and was considered a source of illegal use, visual blight and safety hazards.
Mayor Gualtieri said the work will clean the area, create an unobstructed public beach and form part of the city’s “Metodo Roma” redevelopment plan. The demolition is expected to last a few days, followed by several weeks of waste sorting and removal. The authorities also plan to dismantle the nearby Sporting structure and eventually reopen the Kursaal, with full demolition of both sites targeted for completion by September 2026.
