Rome-Berlin Axis established by Hitler and Mussolini
On October 25, 1936, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini signed a treaty of friendship and political cooperation between Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. This agreement initiated the Rome-Berlin Axis, a rapprochement that later evolved into a military alliance during World War II, eventually linking the two nations with Japan.
The agreement aimed to coordinate foreign policy and establish a common front on key European issues to limit the influence of democratic nations and the League of Nations. This shift followed Italy's diplomatic isolation after its 1935 invasion of Ethiopia, which resulted in economic sanctions from the League of Nations and strained relations with Great Britain and France.
The Spanish Civil War further facilitated cooperation, as both Germany and Italy supported Francisco Franco's forces. While the October 25 agreement did not officially bear the name 'Rome-Berlin Axis,' Mussolini coined the term during a speech in Milan on November 1, 1936, describing the relationship as an axis around which peace-seeking European nations could cooperate.
