Italy clamps down on baby gangs with 539 arrests nationwide

A coordinated police operation across Italy targeted youth criminal groups known as “baby gangs.” Law‑enforcement agencies in 44 provinces carried out raids that resulted in 539 arrests, 954 formal denunciations and the seizure of more than 700 kg of illicit drugs, chiefly cocaine and hashish. The crackdown also uncovered roughly 1,000 online profiles that glorified violence.

The nationwide sweep involved the Polizia di Stato, Carabinieri and local police forces, and prompted regional officials, such as in Alto Adige, to call for heightened vigilance. Authorities said the operation aimed to dismantle networks that threaten public safety and to deter further gang‑related offenses.

The large‑scale action underscores the Italian government's focus on curbing juvenile organized crime and signals a tough stance on drug trafficking linked to these groups.
