Rome ceremony marks delivery of guide dog to visually impaired woman

A new guide dog named Guido was officially presented to Maria, a visually impaired resident of Rome, during a ceremony at the Campidoglio. The event, held in the Sala della Protomoteca, was part of an initiative focused on animal welfare, volunteering, and inclusion.

Guido was trained by the Lions Guide Dog School in Limbiate. The training process involves a rigorous period where selected puppies are placed with puppy walkers to socialize and adapt to daily environments before being assigned to their permanent handlers. For Maria, who previously lived with a guide dog for eighteen years, Guido represents a return to daily autonomy, enabling her to perform routine tasks such as shopping, walking, and traveling.

The ceremony also highlighted the broader necessity for urban accessibility. While the guide dog provides essential independence, observers noted that true inclusion requires public infrastructure, such as unobstructed sidewalks and accessible public transportation, to support the mobility of visually impaired citizens.
