Rome clamps down on microcrime with massive Colosseum security sweep

Italian interior minister Matteo Piantedosi ordered a large‑scale security operation in the area around the Colosseum and Via dei Fori Imperiali after a series of micro‑criminal incidents and assaults on local police. From 18:00, Carabinieri and State Police sealed all main access routes, identified more than 350 people and detained ten individuals. The arrestees faced charges ranging from possession of knives and other weapons, robbery, aggravated theft and drug possession to illegal use of electronic payment tools, violation of the no‑fly zone, and unauthorised tourist‑guide activity. Nine additional persons were reported for similar offences.

The minister praised the operation on social media, emphasizing “no space for impunity” and noting that similar actions have been taken in other Italian cities. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also thanked the forces, highlighting the state’s commitment to public safety in high‑traffic tourist sites. The sweep will be repeated in the coming days with comparable measures.
