Rome clears San Basilio squat, secures 46 GPL cylinders amid wider eviction actions

On 25 July 2026 police carried out an eviction in the San Basilio district of Rome, at via Pieve Torina. The building had been occupied for some time by people of Sinti ethnicity and was included in a prefectural plan. The operation, triggered by a provincial committee on order and public safety, ended with the property returned to its owner and security measures initiated. During the clearance 46 gas cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas (GPL) used by the occupants were recovered and secured by authorities.

In a related raid in the Tor Cervara district, police discovered a large drug‑storage and packaging site. They seized heroin, crack, cocaine, hashish and chemicals used for processing, and identified 30 occupants, including 11 foreign nationals. Three men – a Nigerian, a Tunisian and an Algerian – were transferred to repatriation centres pending deportation.
