Rome Ghetto commemoration marked by tension and insults
Tensions arose during the 83rd anniversary of the Rome Ghetto roundup, a commemoration of the 1,022 Jews deported from the city in 1943. The event, marked by the deportation of which only 16 survivors returned, was characterized by verbal aggression and insults directed at the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) delegation.
Victor Fadlun, president of the Roman Jewish Community, had previously requested that ANPI not participate, citing past tensions regarding Israeli symbols and Palestinian rights activism. While the Jewish Community condemned the insults, the ANPI reported being verbally attacked and driven away from the official area.
The Italian Federation of Partisan Associations (FIAP) clarified that its decision to leave the square was not an act of solidarity with ANPI, but a voluntary move intended to respect the solemnity of the victims and the Jewish Community. FIAP stated the priority was to ensure the ceremony remained a moment of quiet reflection, free from political tension and symbols.
Calls have been made for the Rome municipal government to facilitate dialogue between the Jewish Community, anti-fascist organizations, and pro-Palestinian groups to prevent further social fractures.
