Rome conference plots digital overhaul of Italy's gold market

On 16 July, a conference organised by MP Giulio Centemero gathered gold‑industry representatives, members of the Guardia di Finanza and senior politicians in Rome's Sala Salvadori. The meeting, titled “Mercato dei Compro Oro e Oro da Investimento. Digitalizzazione dei Controlli, Competitività Fiscale e Allineamento Europeo”, focused on modernising control mechanisms, improving traceability and combating money‑laundering in the gold sector.

Speakers highlighted the use of digital tools and artificial intelligence to speed up verifications while keeping final decisions under human oversight. Alessandro Fazio said, “Digital facilities, traceability, faster and more verifiable controls – technology must support legality.” Giovanni Bonati called for an integrated database and a “digital passport” for gold products to certify the entire supply chain. Nunzio Ragno stressed the need for stricter action against illegal activities and organised crime within the industry.

The discussion aimed to create a unified registry, boost fiscal competitiveness and align Italy’s practices with European standards, seeking both consumer protection and innovation in the gold‑buy‑back and investment market.
