Rome: Driver charged after hitting child near school and fleeing

A 54-year-old man has been charged following a hit-and-run incident in the San Basilio district of Rome. On the morning of September 28, an 11-year-old child was struck by a vehicle near the Ennio Morricone Comprehensive Institute on via Belforte del Chienti while with other students.

The driver fled the scene without providing assistance. Following the accident, emergency services transported the child to the hospital, where medical professionals determined their condition was not serious.

Because the vehicle's license plate was not recorded at the time of the collision, the Rome Local Police (IV Gruppo Tiburtino) relied on witness testimonies to reconstruct the event. Through targeted patrols and surveillance in the neighborhood, officers identified a Ford Fiesta matching the descriptions provided by witnesses. The driver has been reported to authorities for fleeing the scene and failure to render aid.
