Rome establishes security zone around Colosseum

Authorities in Rome have established a special security zone, referred to as a ‘red zone’, encompassing the Colosseum and parts of the historic city center. This measure is a response to an increase in thefts, robberies, brawls, and aggressive behavior in the area.

The zone includes the immediate vicinity of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, as well as Colle Oppio, Via dei Fori Imperiali, the area around Piazza Venezia, and the Capitoline Hill. While tourists can still visit these landmarks and move through the area without obstruction, there will be an increased police presence and enhanced capabilities for rapid response to threats.

Law enforcement officials are authorized to monitor individuals deemed potentially dangerous, particularly those exhibiting aggressive behavior or a history of criminal activity. In justified cases, individuals may be removed from the restricted area. These regulations are scheduled to remain in effect until December 24.
