Rome eviction protest spotlights housing crisis and tourist rentals

Around 200 residents, activists, trade‑union members and local officials gathered in Via Badoero, Garbatella, to defend a woman over 100 years old facing eviction. The protest called for an immediate halt to eviction executions in cases of extreme vulnerability and demanded stricter regulation of tourist rentals, which they say fuel soaring property prices.

Organisers highlighted that Rome has issued roughly 4,000 eviction orders this year, with about 2,000 enforced, averaging nine forced removals per day. They criticised the national “Piano Casa” as a propaganda‑driven plan that favours private investors and speculative housing, urging the prefecture and municipal authorities to create a coordination unit to block evictions of fragile households and to curb the proliferation of tourist‑short‑stay licences.

The demonstrators urged the city to protect resident rights over profit‑driven housing models and called for a public table to set clear rules that prevent the displacement of low‑ and middle‑income families.
