Rome faces unregulated golf cart tour surge
Rome is facing a growing issue with the proliferation of golf cart tourist tours, which authorities describe as a “transportation jungle” lacking proper regulation and safety standards. An investigation revealed that out of approximately 400 golf carts operating in the city, only 41 are officially authorized. Many operators bypass regulations by offering tours as a secondary service to primary businesses, such as restaurants, to avoid strict licensing requirements.
Concerns have been raised regarding traffic safety, with reports of vehicles driving in pedestrian zones, illegal parking, and even operating on highways toward Fiumicino Airport. Safety risks include passengers riding without seatbelts and drivers being distracted while explaining sights. The influx of these vehicles has also created significant competition for established taxi and chauffeured car services.
Following these reports, the Carabinieri conducted inspections in central areas like the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. The crackdown resulted in 131 golf carts being checked, 10 being impounded, 13 driver's licenses being revoked, and 38,000 euros in fines issued. Violations included driving without a license, operating without proper commercial permits, and failing to use seatbelts.
