Rome faces water crisis amid management and scarcity concerns
Italy is facing significant water management challenges driven by climate change and infrastructure issues. In Rome, the organization Cittadinanzattiva Lazio has issued a formal warning to Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Acea, and regulatory authorities regarding a severe and persistent shortage of water services. The group reports that thousands of families are experiencing frequent interruptions, with some areas receiving water for only two to three hours a day or facing total outages for entire days.
Addressing these systemic issues, a workshop was held in Rome as part of the Hydroaid International School of Water for Development. The event focused on water resource management strategies in the face of increasing climate emergencies. Discussions included planning for water services in the Euro-Mediterranean area, highlighting that drought—such as the recent crisis in the Piedmont region—is no longer a distant threat but a present necessity requiring immediate adaptation and policy intervention.
