Rome Film Festival emphasizes female directors in upcoming edition
The 21st edition of the Rome Film Festival, scheduled from October 13 to 25, is placing a significant emphasis on female representation in cinema. In the main Progressive Cinema competition, six of the 18 films in contention are directed by women. This includes Italian works such as Susanna Nicchiarelli’s ‘Giorni Felici’ and Kasia Smutniak’s documentary ‘Mustang’.
Artistic director Paola Malanga noted that while female filmmakers are present, their numbers have not yet reached desired levels. To support this mission, the festival has launched a new collaboration with the Casa Internazionale delle Donne, which will host various Italian and international meetings focused on films and documentaries.
The festival lineup also features the film ‘Nowruz, nuovo giorno’ by Francesco Cannavà in the Special Screenings section, which follows the lives of young Iranian women. Additionally, the event expects high-profile international attendance from stars such as Jenna Ortega, Julianne Moore, and Javier Bardem.
