Rome hosts 12th memorial for Stefano Cucchi

The 12th annual memorial for Stefano Cucchi was held in Rome at Fondazione Basso and Monk to honor the 31-year-old surveyor who died in 2009 following a brutal beating by law enforcement officers. The event served as both a moment of remembrance and a platform for social mobilization regarding human rights and prisoner dignity.

Cucchi’s death sparked a long and complex judicial process. Carabinieri Alessio Di Bernardo and Raffaele D’Alessandro were ultimately convicted of manslaughter. The case has since become a significant symbol in Italy for the fight against abuses of power and the struggle for the rights of detainees.

During the memorial, awards were presented to individuals working in human rights and social justice. Stefano’s sister, Ilaria Cucchi, attended the event, continuing her long-standing role in advocating for truth and justice surrounding her brother's death.
