Italy expands museum opening hours and offers free entry on Aug 2

The Italian Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and the municipality of Milan have extended opening hours for three major monuments throughout August 2026. The Colosseo in Rome will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:45 to 23:30, the Pantheon will be open each evening from 19:00 to 23:00 except on Thursdays, and the Castello Sforzesco in Milan will be open from 17:30 to 19:30.

At the same time, the nationwide "Domenica al Museo" programme gives free admission to museums and archaeological sites on Sunday, 2 August 2026. The free‑entry day covers hundreds of venues across Italy, including Rome’s museums and sites, Milan’s civic museums, Siena’s national museums and many regional locations such as those in Tuscany. The Royal Museums of Turin will also hold special evening openings, concerts and guided tours of normally closed areas during August.

The measures aim to spread visitor traffic, accommodate tourists and local residents, and make cultural heritage more accessible during the peak summer month.
