Italy expands August museum hours and adds free entry on first Sunday

The Italian Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and the municipality of Milan have extended opening hours for three major historic sites for the whole month of August. The Colosseo will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:45 to 23:30, the Pantheon from 19:00 to 23:00 (closed on Thursdays) and the Castello Sforzesco from 17:30 to 19:30.

On the first Sunday of August (2 August 2026) museums and archaeological sites across the country will admit visitors for free. In Milan, the “Domenica al Museo” programme grants free access to the civic museums, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Gallerie d’Italia and other venues. In Rome, the Ministry of Culture and Roma Capitale open the state museums, the Capitoline Museums and major archaeological areas at no charge.

Regional cultural institutions are also offering special programmes. The Royal Museums of Turin run evening openings, concerts and guided tours of normally restricted areas throughout August. The Museum of Radio and Television in Turin will be open every day from 9:30 to 18:30, with free admission, to accommodate summer visitors.
