Rome hypermarket introduces installment payments for groceries

A hypermarket chain in Rome has introduced a new payment system allowing customers to pay for groceries in installments. Through a collaboration with a financial company, shoppers can use a QR code to choose between deferring the full amount for 30 days at no cost, splitting the total into three interest-free monthly installments, or opting for a 6 to 12-month financing plan with interest rates.

The initiative has drawn criticism from the CGIL trade union in Rome and the Lazio region. General Secretary Natale Di Cola argued that while presented as a convenience, the system exploits the financial difficulties of citizens by turning essential goods into credit-based purchases. The union has called on the Meloni government to intervene and implement price controls to address the rising cost of living.
