Rome establishes ‘red zone’ around Colosseum to combat rising crime

Rome authorities have established a ‘red zone’ around the Colosseum, the Imperial Forums, and Colle Oppio to combat rising crime. The enhanced security measures, effective from late August until December 24, grant law enforcement expanded powers to remove individuals posing a risk to public safety.

The crackdown follows several violent incidents, including a July confrontation where approximately 50 youths reportedly attacked police officers with fireworks. Authorities have also cited an increase in predatory crimes, such as pickpocketing, drug trafficking, and street scams like ‘three-card monte.’

In addition to the Colosseum area, heightened security and monitoring have been implemented near major landmarks and transport hubs, including Termini Station, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Prefect Lamberto Giannini noted that the measures aim to protect the millions of tourists who visit the historic center annually.
