Rome declares Colosseum and Imperial Fora ‘red zone’ for security

The Prefecture of Rome has declared the area surrounding the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora, and Colle Oppio a ‘red zone’ (zona rossa) to combat rising crime. The measure, effective from August 24 through December 24, 2026, implements enhanced security controls and increased police presence to address issues including theft, robbery, drug trafficking, and public disorder.

Rome's Prefect, Lamberto Giannini, noted that the decision follows a surge in predatory crime and violent incidents, specifically citing a July 1st event where a group of approximately 50 individuals resisted police during an unauthorized gathering, resulting in minor injuries to two officers. The ordinance also allows authorities to remove or ban individuals with certain criminal records from the area.

In addition to the Colosseum site, the security crackdown extends to the Esquilino and San Lorenzo districts, while the previous red zone in Valle Aurelia-Cornelia has been revoked. The heightened surveillance aims to protect the millions of tourists and residents who frequent these historic landmarks and transit through nearby metro stations.
