Rome implements road safety initiatives to reduce traffic accidents
Rome is advancing several initiatives aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic collisions. Through the Black Point program, a collaboration between Roma Capitale and Roma Mobilità, the city has completed safety upgrades at five major intersections across various municipalities. These interventions target high-risk areas characterized by heavy traffic, complex layouts, and poor visibility to protect motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Additionally, Rome is serving as a pilot city for the FIA Risk-Based Road Scores system. This technology uses Roadscor to create digital twins of real intersections, employing advanced simulations to identify potential traffic conflicts before accidents occur. A field test conducted at the intersection of Via dell’Oceano Atlantico, Via dell’Oceano Pacifico, and Via Cristoforo Colombo suggests that targeted redesigns based on this data could reduce collisions by up to 70%. The project was recognized with a Mobility Award at the 2026 World Smart City Awards in Barcelona.
