Rome investigators explore new theory in Pietralata family massacre

Investigators in Rome are exploring a new hypothesis regarding the Pietralata family massacre that occurred on August 31, 2026. While initial reconstructions focused on the father, Luca Abbasciano, new evidence suggests that Valentina Pambianco may have shot her five-year-old daughter, Bianca, her husband, and the family dog before taking her own life.

The Rome Prosecutor's Office has ordered a chemical-ballistic expert report to clarify the sequence of shots. Previous analyses found gunshot residue on the hands of both parents, making it difficult to identify a single shooter.
