Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri faces criticism over green space cuts and Termini construction chaos

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri’s administration has drawn criticism for its handling of public green spaces in Rome. Plans to redevelop Piazza San Silvestro involve extensive paving and the removal of existing trees, prompting protests from local environmental groups and coverage by foreign media such as Le Monde and CNN. Environment assessor Sabrina Alfonsi posted a video showing wilted saplings in Piazza Risorgimento, and the mayor announced a conference with the Soprintendenza to discuss possible modifications that would increase the number of trees and shrubs.

At the same time, the long‑running construction around Rome’s Termini station has created a “labyrinth” of disruptions for commuters and tourists. Inadequate signage and unclear information have forced passengers to navigate unsafe detours, raising concerns about transport safety. Authorities have pledged to finish work in Piazza dei Cinquecento by the end of the year, but users continue to demand clearer communication and better management of the site.
