Rome neighborhood protests demand social security over repression

Residents and social movements in Rome's Pigneto neighborhood have organized protests following a violent assault on two hospitality workers in early September. Demonstrators, including groups such as Potere al Popolo and Unione Sindacale di Base, are advocating for “social security” rather than increased militarization or surveillance.

The protesters argue that true safety stems from investments in public services, such as healthcare, schools, public transport, and housing, rather than increased police presence or cameras. They also criticized the ongoing gentrification and “touristification” of the area, claiming that real estate speculation and the proliferation of short-term rentals are eroding the community fabric.

Similar debates regarding safety and urban management are occurring in other Roman areas like Cinecittà. While some residents call for more law enforcement, community organizers emphasize the need for structural welfare improvements and the maintenance of public spaces to prevent social decay and violence.
