Rome opens free public pools for seniors under heat plan

Rome's municipal government has launched the fifth edition of the "Piscine all’aperto" initiative, part of the "Piano Caldo 2026" heat‑wave response. The programme provides free access to 17 municipal swimming facilities for residents aged 70 and over. Reservations began on 16 June 2026 via the city’s central hotline (800 957 774), with each person allowed up to five entries. The service runs from 22 June to 31 August 2026 and aims to deliver more than 5,000 free admissions.

The scheme is overseen by the city’s sports assessor Alessandro Onorato and social‑policy assessor Barbara Funari, who say the pools offer a cool place to move, socialize and counteract isolation among the city’s most vulnerable seniors. The participating venues include Circolo Montecitorio (Flaminio), Aquaniene (Parioli), Maximo Sport & Fitness (Talenti), Fulvio Bernardini (Pietralata), T4 Tennis Club (Nomentana), Aquatibur (Tiburtina), Villa De Sanctis (Casilino), Piscina Comunale Roma 70 (Tor Bella Monaca), To Live Sports Center (Montagnola), Mario Tobia (San Paolo), Fonte Roma Eur, Ferratella Sporting Club (Eur), Sporting Club Ostiense (San Paolo), Le Cupole (Acilia), Arvalia Nuoto (Corviale), the municipal pool on Via Bravetta and Arena Altero Felici (Ponte Milvio).
