Rome officials and taxi unions oppose Lazio Region golf cart proposal

The Lazio Region has introduced a draft law to regulate the use of golf carts, defined as electric tourist shuttles carrying a maximum of eight passengers. The proposal, presented by Marco Bertucci, aims to establish a regional registry for authorized operators and allow local municipalities to define specific rules for circulation, parking, and quality requirements in high-density tourist areas.

The draft has faced criticism from local officials and taxi unions. Rome City Councilor Elisabetta Lancellotti warned that the legislation must not act as a “sanatoria” (amnesty) for existing unregulated activities, but must instead provide the city with concrete tools to manage traffic, safety, and urban decorum. Similarly, taxi unions have voiced opposition, calling for stricter controls rather than mere legalization of the current situation. The proposal is scheduled for its first discussion within the Public Works and Mobility Commission on September 29.
