Rome officials announce increased traffic enforcement amid transit delays

Rome mobility official Eugenio Patanè has announced the deployment of new speed cameras, tutors, and photored technology to combat road accidents. While fatal accidents in the city decreased by 24.7 percent during the first ten months of 2026, overall accidents rose from 27,282 to 29,481.

Despite these technological interventions, the city faces significant public transportation challenges. Data from the 2026 Equitable and Sustainable Well-being report indicates that Rome's buses average 15.6 km/h, which is below the national average of 16.7 km/h. Trams are even slower, averaging 10.4 km/h compared to the national 13.4 km/h.

Subway services also face delays and infrastructure hurdles. Metro A frequencies fluctuate, while Metro B awaits the full commercial debut of new Hitachi trains following testing phases. Metro C projects face significant delays, with major developments pushed toward 2029.
