Rome faces traffic chaos from tourist golf carts

The historical center of Rome is experiencing significant traffic congestion due to a surge in tourist golf carts. An estimated 400 electric mini-vehicles are operating around major landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Piazza del Popolo.

Recent enforcement actions by the Carabinieri revealed several regulatory violations. During a check of 131 vehicles in late September, authorities impounded ten golf carts, seized 13 driver's licenses, and issued fines totaling 38,000 euros. Investigations found that some drivers lacked licenses and several vehicles were operating as unauthorized rental services.

The influx has sparked intense conflict between tour operators and local taxi unions, who describe the situation as a legal gray area. Taxi representatives have called for investigations into potential tax irregularities and employment law violations. Local officials, including opposition council member Stefano Erbaggi, have expressed frustration over the lack of regulation regarding these large fleets.
