Rome opens first phytobioclimatic shelter in Centocelle

The City of Rome inaugurated its first phytobioclimatic shelter in the Centocelle district. The steel structure, measuring 9.5 × 9.5 m and 4.4 m high, features an olive tree, climbing vines and misting devices that provide shade, reduce heat and filter pollutants. It also offers electric sockets for phones and laptops.

The opening was attended by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Environment Assessor Sabrina Alfonsi, Municipality President Mauro Caliste, Municipal Assessor Edoardo Annucci and Climate Office Director Edoardo Zanchini. The project, funded with over €138,000 from the national “Experimental Programme for Urban Climate‑Change Adaptation” launched in 2021, is part of Rome’s “Piano Caldo” climate‑heat plan and will serve as a prototype for similar installations in areas where planting trees is difficult.
