Rome prison report highlights overcrowding and suicides as Forlì new jail slated for 2027

The Roma Capitale prison watchdog presented its 2025 annual report, describing “deep structural problems” in the city’s penitentiary system, including severe overcrowding, limited access to basic rights and a “dramatic increase in suicide attempts.” Garante Valentina Calderone warned that “we can no longer talk about an emergency; we must confront the problems of the prison as they are, structural phenomena.”

In Forlì, Deputy Rosaria Tassinari (Forza Italia) announced that the new regional prison is still on schedule to be completed by the end of 2027 despite a recent construction halt. She said the project has been adjusted to meet current building standards and that “the work is proceeding according to the timetable,” with full financing already allocated.

Both statements underscore ongoing challenges and investments in Italy’s correctional infrastructure.
